The Entrepreneur Daily series are blog posts that I write when I am working on my side business. My goal is to write a post every day when I am in “entrepreneur mode” and actively working on my business, talking about what I’m grateful for and what I’m working on. In a perfect world, that would be every single day, but in my reality, I work on my business in spurts. I’ve accepted this as my reality for now and hope to improve going forward. This is my entrepreneur journal, to document where I am today.
What I’m Grateful For
Today I’m grateful for rest. That’s right, rest. One thing I have learned over my years of work is that you can easily burn yourself out. Now sometimes you have no choice but to keep the pedal to the metal and say things like, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” That’s fine for periods of time, but you have to build in periods of down time or rest, too.
This past weekend, I rested for 2 days straight. It was a long weekend and I needed the mental rest. It’s not like I was going super hard for the last 4 weeks, but I know the signs of overdoing it, so I stepped back.
My rest consisted of watching lots of college football and Netflix shows. I didn’t read or write anything and I didn’t obsess about work or personal finance. I let it all go for a few days.
I’m not exactly fully recharged and raring to go this morning, but I’m certainly not at the brink of collapse either. I pulled back and put some more juice in the tank.
What I’m Working On
Today is the first day of school for my kids. Three out of the four went back to school, and the youngest will start preschool soon. That means our new morning routine has begun. From now through Christmas we are in the zone…kind of.
The morning is usually chaos, so I get up at 5 am, before the chaos begins. This gives me time to complete my miracle morning routine and get some work done before the yelling starts. Today was a pleasant morning because they are all excited to go to school, but just wait…wait until we are two weeks in and the work starts and they are already exhausted. That’s when the fireworks happen. All the more reason for me to be up early before the craziness begins.
I need to tighten up my morning routine and give it some more urgency. I started doing that today, but it needs to move even faster. I love the feeling of getting work done before the sun is up and before the kids are up, so that’s my general driving force.
Beyond that, I’m focusing on personal finance this week. My financial health results from August were not so great, in my view. I treaded water last month and I want to get some positive momentum going this month. That means digging into my finance spreadsheets and finding ways to pay off more debt this month. I’m waiting for my house refinance to close (fingers crossed it goes through), but I want to take some positive action before I get there.
My financial health is all part of my entrepreneurial health as well, since my personal finance will support any endeavors I undertake as an entrepreneur. One fuels the other, so I better have a solid baseline to work from for that support.
Goals For the Day
The goal for today is to stick to my frugal ways with my grocery shopping. I’m not the big grocery shopper, that’s my wife. I’m usually a bit more free with spending, especially when I go to the warehouse store for food. We stock up on staples for cheaper there, but we also get snookered into buying things we don’t necessarily need…in bulk.
The plan is to shop with my grocery list and stick to it. That will help me keep the costs down because I won’t stray towards the stuff we don’t really need.
It’s not a big goal for the day, but that’s mostly because I’m doing a carbohydrate day (I eat primarily carbs for 6-8 hours) and I get tired very fast when taking in excess carbs. It’s all part of my Carb Nite diet that works very well for me.
